He heard them sometimes, asking Ara-chan why he spent so much time with him, was it a joke or something, he was weird and dumb and got in fights with everyone all the time and I heard his brother is so crazy they want to put him in jail with grownups and he's only thirteen.

Sokka sometimes jokes that they both use canes, though for different reasons.

Charles leaned closer. Francis and Dusty came over. "What are you doing?"

"I am making a joke," she said. "I'm gonna see if I can make Scott laugh."

"Naw," said Francis.

When you talk to little kids, they have this particular cadence of emphasis when they're trying to tell you something Important that I find very funny, so I wanted to try expressing that.
